Breastmilk, Backpacks, and Boogers: Flu Season Survival for New Moms

It’s officially that time of year - the leaves are turning, backpacks are packed, and bam, someone’s already sneezing at drop-off. If you're a brand new mom (especially to a newborn and older kids), you're probably riding that wave of back-to-school chaos with a touch of panic and a bottle of hand sanitizer in every room.

First: you are not alone. Second: it’s okay to be a little stressed about flu season. Especially when your precious little one is still in that squishy, sleepy, highly sensitive newborn phase.

I see you. I’ve been you. I had two babies in a pandemic, wore PPE in my own home AND while delivering my babies, and I also washed groceries like I was prepping for surgery. It was a time. You had to be there. So, when I say I understand the anxiety, I really mean it.

But here’s the science-y, empowering truth I wish every mom knew:

Your Breastmilk Is Basically a Tiny, Tailored Immune System in a Breast (Or a Bottle!)

Seriously. It’s not just food. It’s like nature's own version of those little hazmat suits, but snuggly and delicious.

When you’re exposed to germs - from your older kids, your baby, or that one stranger who insisted on touching your infant's hand in public - your body gets to work producing targeted antibodies that show up in your milk, ready to help your baby fight off illness, often before symptoms even start.

🔬 A Peek at What’s Actually in Your Milk (It's Wildly Cool)

  • Immunoglobulins (like Secretory IgA): They coat your baby's gut and airway lining to block viruses and bacteria like a boss.

  • White blood cells: Yes, actual live immune cells are in there. Like little microscopic bodyguards.

  • Anti-inflammatory compounds: To help keep baby’s immune response balanced, not overactive.

  • Prebiotics: Feeds baby’s good gut bacteria - critical for developing a strong immune system.

  • Probiotics: Live good bacteria straight from you to your baby, promoting gut health and fighting the bad guys.

  • Fatty acids: They don’t just grow baby brains - they help build immune cells and control inflammation.

  • Bioactive proteins: With antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties. Basically, the Marvel superhero team of milk components.

🙅‍♀️ You Can’t Control Every Germ (And That’s Okay)

It’s impossible. Kids are walking petri dishes. Here are a few things you can do that actually help:

✔️ Handwashing after school and before snuggles. It's a must as soon as my kids walk in the door. ✔️ Holding off on face kisses if someone’s under the weather ✔️ Hydration, decent sleep (ha!), and nourishment for you - because your health helps fuel theirs ✔️ Keeping baby close (and kissed less by Aunt Janet - but more by mom - especially during cold season)

💛 And a Loving Reminder...

If you're combi-feeding - or even giving just the occasional bottle of pumped milk - that’s amazing. ANY amount of breastmilk, no matter how small or infrequent, has tonnes of components that support your baby in ways we still don’t fully understand.

Whether you’re exclusively nursing, bottle-feeding pumped milk, combi-feeding with formula, or just getting through the day however you can - you’re doing great. Truly.
